MOM AND ME
to Ken and Ruby Casey

Piano and organ music
Was his spiritual bouquet;
Sounds that praised God and called angels,
Welcomed him home everyday.
Once there, he'd strip his hot feet bare,
Set aside damp socks and work shoes;
Rest his sore back on the hard floor,
Tired legs on the couch and he'd snooze.
Revitalized by a deep sleep
Most don't feel sleeping in a bed;
He'd fix a snack, build a sandwich,
Of scallions side by side on bread.
Thick, juicy slices from apples,
He shared with his Irish offspring;
And sang as he waltzed his true love,
'Round the house missing everything.
I heard him say two words often,
I read them once on a white page;
The phrase spiritus sanctus meant
Holy Spirit in his language.
When angels come to take him home,
He'll hear music that's heavenly;
And recall the keyboard duet,
'Twas music played by mom and me.
