ANGELS IN THE AIR
to Margaret Ray

Someone knocked on the stormdoor,
Knocked one knock, then knocked again;
When I opened it slightly,
Two strangers asked to come in.
They had traveled some distance,
Their clothes were tattered and worn;
Asked,
"Can you spare a biscuit?"
They seemed helplessly forlorn.
I welcomed them with a nod,
Offered them something to drink;
Seated the two comfortably,
Went to prepare food and think.
The two I had reached out to,
Weren't strangers to our Father;
They thanked God first, then thanked me,
I smiled and said,
"No bother."
Remember the pair often,
Thought I saw them here or there;
Once felt their presence, looked up,
Saw two angels in the air.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
